New Faculty Workshop

Every August, the Leonhard Center and the College of Engineering welcome new faculty (new to being a faculty member and/or new to Penn State) with our New Faculty Workshop. The New Faculty Workshop is a two-day workshop hosted by the Leonhard Center the week before classes start. The workshop addresses a broad spectrum of topics ranging from writing course objectives to balancing your job and your life. Although it isn’t possible to address all pertinent topics in the time allotted, this workshop provides new faculty with a set of useful tools relating to teaching, research, and faculty life.

Topics explored at the New Faculty Workshop include:

  • Planning your course
  • Teaching and learning activities
  • Assessment and grading
  • Student success with integrity: A discussion of academic integrity at Penn State
  • Technology tools for learning
  • Rethinking engineering presentations
  • Teaching, equity, and inclusion
  • Jump starting your research agenda
  • A day in the life of an engineering professor (current faculty panel)
  • Mini-Research Resource Fair

About

The Leonhard Center for Enhancement of Engineering Education was established in 1990 by an endowment from William and Wyllis Leonhard. Its mission is to catalyze the changes that are crucial to maintaining world-class engineering education at Penn State. In 2006 the Leonhard Center became the home for two other major programs that support teaching and learning in the College - the Office of Assessment & Instructional Support and Programs for Engineering Writing & Speaking.
